effects of electroconvulsive therapy on thyroid function parameters in depressed patients
نویسندگان
چکیده
introduction: a considerable portion of patients with depressive disorders do not respond properly to medical treatment and need electroconvulsive therapy (ect). on the other hand, as some beneficial effects of ect are attributed to increase in thyroid hormones, levothyronin is used as an adjuvant prior to ect. the aim of this study was to evaluate thyroid function changes after ect. methods: this was an out come study done on depressed patients attending the psychiatric clinic who were resistant to medical therapy and therefore candidates for ect. blood samples were drawn before the first and the last ect and serum levels of t3, t4, t3ru and tsh were measured. results: thirty-one patients (19 males and 12 females) were enrolled the study. serum levels of t3 and t3ru significantly increased by ect (p-values of 0.0001 and 0.029, respectively). t3 increased in all 31 patients and this was true for both genders and all age groups and also for various durations of depression, but t4 and tsh levels decreased significantly (p-values of 0.025 and 0.0001, respectively). conclusion: our findings showed that some effects of ect may be primarily due to increased t3 levels and other parameters change accordingly. these findings need to be confirmed by further studies

Radioiodine therapy effects on salivary gland function in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer [Persian]
Salivary gland involvement is one of the radioiodine therapy complications. Salivary gland scintigraphy in quantitative mode can accurately evaluate salivary gland function. Methods: Salivary gland scintigraphy was performed with Tc-99m Pertechnetate, at the time of iodine therapy as a basic study and then 3 weeks and 3 months afterwards. Ejection Fraction (EF) of parotid and submandibula...

متن کاملShort-Term Effects of Electroconvulsive Therapy on Subjective and Actigraphy-Assessed Sleep Parameters in Severely Depressed Inpatients
Background. Sleep disturbances are a key feature of major depression. Electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) may improve polysomnography-assessed sleep characteristics, but its short-term effects on actigraphy-assessed and subjective sleep characteristics are unknown. We therefore aimed to assess the effects of ECT on subjective and objective sleep parameters in a proof-of-principle study. Methods. ...

متن کاملThe effect of electroconvulsive therapy on the levels of oxidative stress factors in the prefrontal cortex of depressed rats
Background and Objective: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the effective and less complicated methods for treatment of depression in cases of resistance to common treatments. Given the fundamental role of pre-frontal cortex on changing the mood of depression-related behaviors in depressed patients, the effects of electroconvulsive therapy on enzymatic activity of this cortex were taken...
